Safety Instructions

Read all instructions before use. Failure to follow can cause fire, electric shock, or injury.

  1. Use only with 12V lead-acid batteries. Do not charge frozen or damaged batteries.
  2. Ensure area is well-ventilated. Batteries produce explosive gases.
  3. Connect clamps to battery before plugging charger into AC outlet.
  4. Connect RED clamp to POSITIVE (+) terminal first, then BLACK clamp to NEGATIVE (-) terminal or vehicle chassis.
  5. Set charger to OFF before making or disconnecting connections.
  6. Keep sparks, flames, and smoking materials away from battery.

WARNING! Risk of explosion. Never lean over battery during charging. Wear eye protection.

Installation & Setup

Unpack charger and inspect for damage. Place on stable, dry, non-flammable surface near battery.

  1. Prepare Battery: Clean battery terminals. Ensure vent caps are secure and level.
  2. Connect Clamps: With charger OFF, connect red clamp to battery positive (+). Connect black clamp to battery negative (-) or a clean, unpainted metal part of chassis.
  3. AC Connection: Plug charger into a grounded 120V AC, 60Hz outlet.
  4. Select Charge Rate: Turn rotary switch to desired setting (2A, 10A, or 50A Engine Start).

CAUTION! Do not place charger directly above battery where dripping acid could damage unit.

Controls and Indicators

Front Panel:

Operation: Always start in OFF position. Select charge rate based on battery size and need. For maintenance charging on motorcycles, lawn equipment, use 2A. For standard car batteries, use 10A. Use 50A ENGINE START only for short bursts to crank an engine.

Charging Procedure

  1. Initial Connection: Follow Installation steps 1-3 (connect clamps, then plug in).
  2. Select Charge Rate: Turn switch to 2A or 10A based on battery capacity. Refer to battery label for recommended charge rate.
  3. Monitor Charge: Ammeter will show charge current. Current will gradually decrease as battery reaches full charge.
  4. Charging Time: As a rule of thumb: Charging Time (hours) = (Battery Amp-Hours) / (Charge Rate in Amps). Example: A 50Ah battery on 10A charge takes approx. 5 hours.
  5. Disconnecting: Turn switch to OFF. Unplug charger from AC outlet. Remove BLACK clamp first, then RED clamp from battery.

Tip: For maintenance (trickle) charging on stored vehicles, use 2A setting and monitor to prevent overcharging.

Engine Start Assistance

Use only if battery has some charge but is too weak to crank engine.

  1. Ensure vehicle ignition is OFF and all accessories are OFF.
  2. Connect clamps securely as per Installation steps (positive first, then negative to chassis).
  3. Plug charger into AC outlet.
  4. Turn rotary switch to 50A ENGINE START position.
  5. Wait 2-3 minutes for battery to accept some charge.
  6. Attempt to start vehicle. Crank for no more than 5 seconds. If engine doesn't start, wait 3 minutes before next attempt.
  7. Once engine starts, immediately turn switch to OFF.
  8. With engine running, disconnect charger: Unplug AC cord, then remove clamps (black first).

WARNING! 50A mode is for short-term engine assist only. Do not use for continuous charging. Do not leave unattended.

Maintenance & Storage

Unplug and clean after each use. Inspect cables and clamps for damage.

CAUTION! Do not immerse in water or use solvents. Internal fan requires no user maintenance.

Troubleshooting

SymptomPossible CauseCorrective Action
Ammeter shows zero, fan not runningNo AC power / Switch in OFFCheck outlet; ensure plug is secure; turn switch to charge position.
Ammeter pegs to high then drops to zeroReverse polarity connection / Bad battery cellCheck clamp polarity (red to +, black to -). Battery may be shorted or sulfated.
Charger gets very hotOverheating / Blocked ventsTurn OFF and allow to cool. Ensure ventilation slots are clear. Do not cover charger.
Engine does not crank in 50A modeBattery severely discharged / Poor connectionsCheck clamp connections on battery and chassis. Battery may be beyond recovery.
Low charge current on ammeterBattery near full charge / High internal resistanceThis is normal as battery charges. If current stays very low on a discharged battery, battery may be faulty.
