Safety Precautions

Read all instructions before use. Use only as intended.

  1. Do not use on live wires. Ensure power is OFF before connecting transmitter.
  2. Keep away from moisture, heat sources, and explosive atmospheres.
  3. Use proper personal protective equipment (PPE) when working with electrical systems.
  4. Inspect test leads and unit for damage before each use.
  5. Use only specified batteries; remove if not used for extended periods.

WARNING! Risk of electric shock. Never connect transmitter to energized circuits. This tool is for low-voltage applications only.

Specifications

Controls and Indicators

Transmitter: POWER switch (OFF/TONE/CONTINUITY), Output Jack, Battery Compartment.

Receiver: POWER switch (OFF/ON), Sensitivity Knob (1-5), Speaker, LED Signal Strength Indicator (Green/Yellow/Red), Input Jack for accessories.

Operation: Set transmitter mode (TONE for tracing, CONTINUITY for testing). Adjust receiver sensitivity for optimal detection. LED and tone pitch increase near signal source.

Basic Operation

  1. Install Batteries: Open battery compartments on both units; insert 9V batteries observing polarity.
  2. Power On: Set transmitter to OFF. Set receiver to ON; adjust sensitivity to mid-level.
  3. Connect Transmitter: Use test leads or adapters to connect transmitter to cable under test. Ensure cable is not live.
  4. Select Mode: For tracing, set transmitter to TONE. For break/short testing, set to CONTINUITY.
  5. Use Receiver: Slowly sweep receiver along suspected path. Listen for tone and watch LEDs.

Tip: Start with low sensitivity; increase as needed to avoid false signals from adjacent wires.

Tracing Wires & Cables

To trace a wire through a wall, floor, or conduit:

  1. Disconnect cable from any active device or power source.
  2. Connect transmitter (TONE mode) to one conductor of the cable using clips or adapter.
  3. Connect transmitter's ground clip (black) to known ground or other conductor if needed for circuit completion.
  4. With receiver ON, sweep area. Highest tone/LED indication is directly above cable.
  5. Mark path with tape or marker as you trace.
  6. To identify specific cable in a bundle, trace each individually.

WARNING! Metallic conduits or nearby power lines may interfere. Reduce sensitivity if receiver picks up stray signals.

Continuity Testing

To check for breaks or shorts in a cable:

  1. Disconnect cable completely from any circuit.
  2. Set transmitter to CONTINUITY mode.
  3. Connect transmitter leads to each end of a single conductor (if cable has multiple wires, test each separately).
  4. Listen: Continuous beep indicates good continuity (no break). No sound indicates an open circuit.
  5. If beep sounds when testing between two different conductors, a short circuit exists.

Note: For long cables, tone may be faint; ensure good connection and fresh batteries.

Care & Maintenance

Uninstall batteries for long-term storage. Clean with dry cloth; do not use solvents.

CAUTION! Do not expose to water or extreme temperatures. Keep away from children.

Troubleshooting

SymptomPossible CauseCorrective Action
No power (no LED/sound)Dead batteries, incorrect installationReplace with fresh 9V batteries; ensure correct polarity.
Weak or no signal detectionLow batteries, poor connection, high sensitivityReplace batteries; check clips/adapters; reduce sensitivity.
False signals/interferenceNearby live wires, sensitivity too highEnsure traced wire is dead; lower sensitivity; move away from power sources.
Continuity test not workingOpen circuit, dirty contactsCheck for breaks in wire; clean test lead clips.
Receiver audio distortedLow battery, damaged speakerReplace battery; if persists, contact support.

Reset: Turn both units OFF, remove batteries for 30 seconds, reinstall.
